"Pungpae" was the birthplace of the founder of the Han dynasty of China.
Designated Historic Site No. 288, the Jeondong Cathedral was built in 1914 in a western-style cathedral design. This is the largest western-style structure in the Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do provinces. The outer red brick walls are quite remarkable, as are the entrance way and bell tower in the winter. The arched entrance way gives a Byzantine-like feel, while a small bell tower located in the center adds a unique beauty. Sadly, part of the cathedral was destroyed in a 1988 fire.
Gyeonggijeon Portrait Shrine 경기전 (慶基殿) is the place where the portrait of King Taejo Yi Seong-gye is enshrined. It was built in 1410 shortly after the death of Yi Seong-gye, the founder of the Joseon dynasty. Originally, 5 sites throughout Korea were selected to enshrine portraits of the dynastic founder: one each in Gaeseong, Yeongheung, Jeonju, Gyeongju, and Pyeongyang. However, all but the one in Jeonju was destroyed by Japanese armies during the 1592-98 invasions. Gyeonggijeon itself was burned down shortly thereafter but was rebuilt in 1614.
