The next day, we travel around Jeju by ourself. Our 1st destination of the day is Sanbang-san 산방산 (山房山). According to local legend, a hunter shot an arrow at a deer on Halla mountain. It missed and hit the King Heaven instead. The angry King of Heaven ripped off the top of the mountain where he had been holding on to it, and cast it towards the sea. The resulting crater became Baengnokdam 백록담 (白鹿潭), literally "white deer lake", and the part taken off became Sanbang-san.
Located near the middle of the southern exposure of this 395 meter high mountain of steep and jagged cliff sides is a small lava grotto. This grotto is known as Sanbang Temple Grotto. Here at Sanbang Grotto Shrine is a statue of the Buddha to which, from ancient times, people have come to spiritually cleanse themselves and pay respect to Buddha. Inside the grotto is a small spring of crystal clear water issuing from the rocks. It is claimed that these waters are the tears of a heavenly being named Sanbang Dok who is said to have accepted all the misery and sufferings of the Human World.
Directions:
To get there take a bus at Jeju Bus Terminal, gate 8. This bus goes up and down road 1135 with a deviation at Changcheon-ri that takes you past Sanbangsan then down to Moseulpo port. You have to get off at Sanbangsan.
